Things to do
Dorchester is Dorset ’s county town, and
is ideally situated for exploring Dorset ’s Heritage Coast
and the beautiful countryside. Dorchester has many links with history,
ranging from the iron age through to more modern history as can
be seen in the Dorset
County Museum. It was the home town of Thomas Hardy and his
homes ‘Max
Gate’ and Hardy's cottage are open to the public. There
are many other attractions including the Tutankhamen
Exhibition, Maiden
Castle (ancient iron age hillfort), The
Military Museum. Shopping is varied with many individual shops.
Our Town Crier can be seen (and heard!) about town, and along with
other guides, offers a range of walking tours.
You will be spoilt for choice when it comes to eating out, with a variety of good restaurants, cosy pubs and homely tea rooms to choose from.
There are many other family attractions to visit in the area.
Weymouth is the closest seaside town, situated
only 8 miles away, with its beautiful sandy bay and safe bathing
for children.
We’ll let you into the secret of our favourite beach when you arrive!
Villages like Cerne Abbas, with the famous Giant
carved into the hill and its Abbey, pubs and coffee shops and Milton
Abbas with its Abbey and school are among the many pretty
places to visit in and around Dorset
